Broadway will be closed at midnight until 5 a.m. from Alameda to Alaska. Local detours will be in place.

Highway 6 (6th Avenue) has another closure due to construction. The closure will take place at Federal starting Saturday night at 9 p.m. and it will be closed until Sunday at 7 a.m. The alternate route is Sheridan Boulevard. It’s part of a $100 million project where Colorado Department of Transportation crews are fixing bridges along the route.

A mudslide measure about 75 feet wide buried the highway with 7 feet of debris Tuesday. Colorado Department of Transportation officials said the road remained closed overnight. Geologists were to examine the stability of the slope before crews could clear the debris and reopen the road.

Photographs showed full grown pine trees, boulders and mud on the two-lane highway leading up the pass.

The slide happened about 90 miles east of a massive mudslide Saturday that left three people missing.

“Investigator teams are processing both crime scene locations where the remains were found. One of the locations is at the Prewitt Reservoir, which is located approximately 18 miles southwest of Sterling along Highway 6,” Sterling police said in a statement. “The second location is several miles west of Lorenzo, Neb.”

Lorenzo is located just across the state border.

Police said no other individuals were involved and there is no threat to the public.

Neighbors said both Johnson and his grandparents were quiet and private.

“It wasn’t a big surprise when I found out that he was involved, but I sure didn’t, I didn’t think it would be that gruesome, I guess,” said neighbor Ron McBride.

IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) – Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a deadly rafting accident on Clear Creek.

One man is dead after he left his raft and floated several miles down the rushing water on Saturday. It’s not clear if he was thrown from the raft or somehow fell out. The raft didn’t tip over.

(credit; CBS)

(credit; CBS)

Other people in the water unsuccessfully tried to rescue the man, identified as Kenneth Barkley, 41, from Brighton.

Highway 6 was closed at mile 260 for the investigation but has reopened.

Barkley’s family members were in two rafts on the creek. The raft ahead Barkley’s tipped over but those people were able to get to safety.

Additional Information From The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office

Jefferson County, Co. – Effective at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 30th, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Golden Police Department will limit waterway activities on Clear Creek. These temporary restrictions apply to Clear Creek in unincorporated Jefferson County, as well as those portions of Clear Creek within the City of Golden, including Vanover Park

Water activities prohibited by the order include all single-chambered air inflated devices such as belly boats, inner tubes and single chambered rafts, as well as “body-surfers” and swimming.

Kayaks, whitewater canoes and multi-chambered professionally guided rafts and river boards are exempt, but are encouraged to observe extreme caution due to the safety concerns surrounding swift moving water and floating debris. All of the above users and occupants must have the use of a Type I, Type III, or Type V Coast Guard approved paddling life jacket and a water use designed helmet.

Violators may be issued a summons for a class 2 petty offense, punishable by a fine of one hundred dollars. These restrictions will be strictly enforced in an effort to minimize the risk to those using the waterway.

These temporary water restrictions will remain in effect until further notice.

Man Who Died On Clear Creek May Have Suffered Medical Condition

IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) – A man died after falling out of his raft on Clear Creek on Saturday. Others tried to save him but were unsuccessful.

The incident happened on the creek off Highway 6 near Idaho Springs and rough water was not to blame for the man’s death.

The man has been identified as Kenneth Barkley, 41, from Brighton.

“I think the important thing is we were able to determine that his raft did not overturn,” a police officer said.

Barkley had rented a raft in Idaho Springs. Based on all accounts he may have had a medical issue that caused him to fall out. David Costlow is the executive director of the Colorado River Outfitters Association. He learned that Barkley was sitting in the back of the raft.

“After hitting the water, did not appear to be trying to self-rescue or have any swimming strokes of any kind. So was somewhat motionless,” Costlow said.

Barkley was with his wife and teenage daughter. The rafting company had no comment but Cosla said his guide had three years of experience. It is not easy to retrieve someone who falls out of a raft and is motionless.

“He was maybe a half a mile, two miles before he was able to be pulled from the water. You know it makes it difficult when you can’t throw a throw rope and have someone grab it,” Costlow said.

Costlow said that it took about 20 minutes to retrieve Barkley’s body.

The official cause of death could be released on Monday.

CENTRAL CITY, Colo. (CBS4) – A rockslide that occurred Tuesday afternoon kept all lanes of the Central City Parkway closed overnight.

There is no estimate when the road will reopen, partly because engineers haven’t been able to reach the area to assess the damage.

The parkway is one route casino patrons use to reach Central City from Interstate 70. Another route, Highway 6 through Black Hawk, is now the alternative.

Crews need to assess the stability of the hillside before they can begin moving the rocks.

Debris, some of it bus-sized, slid across all four lanes. One lane reopened Tuesday night for emergency vehicles.

The road is private, so state funds won’t be used to clear the road.

2 Aboard Copter That Crashed Into Colorado River

LOMA, Colorado (AP) — The Daily Sentinel in Grand Junction reports that authorities say at least two people were aboard a helicopter that crashed about 6:10 p.m. Saturday into the Colorado River near Loma.

The aircraft crashed under unknown circumstances near Highway 6, exit 15. Allen Kenitzer with the Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft is as a Xenon Gyroplane.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

Loma is located just northwest of Grand Junction.

The Daily Sentinel reports that the crash site is not easily accessible, so another helicopter has been dispatched to ferry personnel back and forth from the scene.

First-responders told the newspaper that two fishermen witnessed the crash, rushed to the helicopter and pulled at least one victim from inside.

2 Killed After Gyroplane Crashes Into Colorado River Near Loma

LOMA, Colo. (AP) – Two people aboard a helicopter-like aircraft were killed when it crashed into a river in western Colorado, but no one on the ground was injured, authorities said Sunday.

The gyroplane went into the Colorado River shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department said.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Mark Shook, 61, of Peyton, Colo., and Rebecca Jane Molle, 50, of Grand Junction.

Shook died of multiple injuries from the crash, and Molle drowned after the crash, the coroner’s office said. Both deaths were ruled accidental.

The sheriff’s department said no one else was on board.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer said the aircraft was a Xenon gyroplane. Gyroplanes look like helicopters but are powered by propellers. Air flow created by the aircraft’s forward motion spins the rotors, which provide lift.

The FAA and the National Transportation Board are investigating.

Witness Ron Jenkins said he and another man were fishing on the bank of the Colorado River when the gyroplane crashed nearby.

It began to fishtail and sparks were flying from it before it crashed nose-first in shallow water, he told the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel (http://tinyurl.com/mnzu54k).

Jenkins said he and the other angler hurried to their boat, went downriver to the gyroplane and then waded to it. They were able to remove one victim by cutting a seat belt, he said.

The sheriff’s department said the crash disrupted electric service to some areas, but no details were available. Grand Valley Power said service had been restored by Sunday morning.

CDOT Almost Ready To Open Bridge At Federal Boulevard & 6th

$

DENVER (CBS4) – The westbound ramp from 6th Avenue to Federal Boulevard remains closed as the Colorado Department of Transportation gets ready to get rid of an old bridge.

CDOT has been working on this project since February.

The new bridge at the location opens Monday morning, but in order to demolish the old bridge the westbound off ramp getting off 6th will be closed until Thursday night.

This new bridge opening Monday morning replaces the old Federal Boulevard bridge that was built in 1956.

“It was an obsolete bridge that was time to be replaced,” CDOT spokeswoman Amy Ford told CBS4. “This is part of a much broader project — the U.S. 6 design build project.”

The Knox Court bridge over Highway 6 was replaced earlier this year.

The Federal Boulevard bridge becomes the second of six bridges in all getting a new look.

“Then next weekend starting on Saturday night we’re going to have a 55 hour closure where we will demolish the bridge,” Ford said.

Watch out for major closures on Highway 6 during the demolition phase next weekend. But for this week, in the run-up to the demolition the westbound off-ramp approaching Federal Boulevard will remain closed until Thursday night.

“No explosions unfortunately, which is always much cooler, what you’ll see actually are ram hoses, that are machines that eat away at the bridge and demolish it,” Ford said.

The demolition of the old Federal Boulevard bridge next weekend will be going on around the clock and it will involve 100 workers.

Authorities say Sheya lost control and rolled down an embankment and got the wheels of his SUV stuck in the creek. There is a sharp curve and no guard rails in that section of U.S. 6 in Clear Creek Canyon.

The State Patrol says it is still trying to determine when the crash occurred after Sheya was reported missing to the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office on Friday.

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4) – Two days after he went missing, a passerby on Saturday discovered Danny Sheya after his SUV had gone off an embankment on eastbound Highway 6 and into Clear Creek near Golden.

Colorado State Patrol investigators and the Jefferson County coroner are looking into what caused Sheya, 65, to drive off the road, and just how long he had been in the creek before he was discovered.

“What we’re told is it’s probably a cardiac arrest while driving,” Danny Sheya’s niece Alia Sheya said.

Alia Sheya is still in shock.

“He was a beautiful person that deserves to be remembered, not as the person in the creek, but the person who was filled with so much love,” she said.

Days of searching for her Uncle Danny, who had been missing since Thursday night, came to a heartbreaking end when someone spotted him and his car partially submerged under water.

(credit: CBS)

(credit: CBS)

“This just happened to be a place where there are no guard rails or anything like that to protect him,” Chief John Bales with Golden Fire Rescue said. “So it was into the water and down a pretty steep embankment.”

Alia Sheya said her uncle was on his way back to his Aurora home from a business trip in Utah when his car veered off the road. She feels grateful, not only to the countless friends, family members and near-strangers who helped find him, but also the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office that lead the search.

(credit: CBS)

(credit: CBS)

“So close to the holidays, I can’t help but think that this is what Christmas is — is having people come together,” she said.

The family said part of what made the search so difficult was the fact that the search area was so large. Danny Sheya’s cellphone was also an older model and didn’t have a GPS locator.
