GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)– A portion of Interstate 70 was closed for about three hours on Tuesday during an investigation into a man with a gun. The suspect was apparently involved in an altercation on the highway near Rifle.

I-70 was closed in both directions from West Rifle to Rulison, along with Highway 6 which parallels the interstate. There were no reports of any shots fired.

What started the altercation is being investigated. The I-70 closure began about 11:30 a.m. Lanes were reopened about 2:30 p.m.

The suspect was arrested.

Standoff Along I-70 In Western Colorado Began With Stabbing

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) – A standoff that shut down Interstate 70 for more than two hours in western Colorado started after authorities say a man cut the throat of another man trying to help him after a car crash.

The Daily Sentinel reports that two men at a nearby business agreed to give 38-year-old Justin Madrid and a co-worker a ride back to the car along I-70 near Rifle Tuesday.

According to court documents, when one of the helpers said he didn’t think it could be driven, Madrid allegedly cut him. The victim’s co-worker then stabbed Madrid in the arm.

Madrid fled to a hillside and refused to surrender. Authorities say the highway was closed to avoid the possibility of shots being fired near traffic.

Madrid is being held in jail. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer.

Bald Mountain Fire In Clear Creek Canyon Area Forces Closure Of Highway 6

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – A small wildfire, dubbed the Bald Mountain Fire, broke out Friday afternoon in Jefferson County and authorities have shut down Highway 6 in Clear Creek Canyon. The closure went into effect at approximately 3:20 p.m. Friday and would not reopen until Saturday.

Copter4 captured video of a plume of smoke and some trees on fire on a mountaintop near the highway.

According to Intercanyon Fire Deputy Chief Daniel Hatlestad, a second helicopter has been requested for additional water drops.

A Copter4 image of the wildfire in Clear Creek Canyon (credit: CBS)

The size of the fire was about 25 acres burning in rough, rocky terrain on Friday night. The closest home is sixth-tenths of a mile away from the blaze. As of Friday evening, no structures were threatened.

West Metro Fire Rescue sent a crew of firefighters and a brush truck to help out with the wildfire. There are nine agencies helping fight the fire with a total of 50 firefighters on scene for the night.

Low humidity combined with gusty southwesterly winds of 25 mph have brought an elevated threat for wildfires to Colorado on Friday, and those conditions are contributing to fueling the fire.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning until 8 p.m. for the Interstate 25 corridor from Denver to Trinidad and along the Arkansas River valley. Much of the western slope is also included.

(credit: CBS)

The combination of low humidity, gusty winds, and dry vegetation means if a fire were to start on Friday, it could spread rapidly.

While this September has been a very warm month, it has also been a mainly dry month. The last measurable precipitation that was on Sept. 8 and about half of Colorado is considered to be at least “abnormally dry.”

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)– A park along US 6 got some mush-needed attention on Saturday. That’s when hundreds of people volunteered to pick up trash in Clear Creek Canyon Park.

For a lot of people Clear Creek Canyon is just the road to the casinos, but it’s actually much more.

“Most people use this space as a drive through and so we’re just using this day to shine a light on that it’s actually a park,” said Matt Robbins, the Community Connections Manager at Jefferson County Open Space.

Saturday is National Public Lands Day and Jefferson County Open Space decided it was the perfect opportunity to gather some volunteers, shut down the highway and beautify the canyon.

“This is about a 13-mile stretch of road so we’ve actually dispersed folks every mile and they’re working the roadway and then down off the roadway down to the water’s edge,” said Robbins.

Aaron Paul is one of the 600 who signed up to pick up trash. He said the canyon has probably needed some T.L.C. for a while now.

“It’s obvious that people are just throwing things out their window,” said Paul. “I found a lot of things that are really old, so it’s just been piling up for years.”

He uses the trails in the canyon regularly and says he wishes the people doing all the dumping cold see the damage they are doing.

“I mean obviously it’s frustrating. I imagine the folks who are littering, and not all of it is intentional but the vast majority of it… I imagine they are not out here cleaning it up,” said Paul.

A lot of what volunteers picked up was micro trash or little pieces of garbage that might fall out of your pack while hiking or your getting in and out of the car. While the hundreds that gave their time and effort Saturday can’t stop people from littering they can pick up after them and help our open spaces survive.

“We’re very appreciative,” said Matt.

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – Highway 6 over Loveland Pass is closed after a driver was killed in a crash Thursday morning. The collision happened at 8:26 a.m. in Summit County between a commercial truck and a pickup truck and the cleanup has been complicated by the fact that hazardous materials were onboard the commercial truck.

So far it’s not clear what caused the accident, but black ice was being reported by emergency crews while they were responding to the crash.

“Our crews reported very slick conditions out there this morning, but the cause of the accident and further investigation will be handled by the Colorado State Patrol,” said Summit Fire & EMS spokesman Steve Lipsher.

A photo from the scene taken by a passerby showed a double trailer truck off the side of the highway in a ditch in snowy conditions.

The driver of the pickup truck was killed and the commercial truck driver wasn’t hurt.

Authorities said they weren’t sure what hazardous substances might be onboard the commercial truck beyond some gas that leaked from it.

ARAPAHOE BASIN, Colo. (CBS4)– The Colorado Department of Transportation conducted avalanche mitigation on Highway 6 in the Loveland Pass area of Summit County on Tuesday morning. One blast sent 6-8 feet of snow over the highway.

The blast on the “Widowmaker” about midmorning created the avalanche that left a snow slide over the highway, which was closed at the time. Travel to A Basin was temporarily blocked to skiers as a result.

Crews estimated it will take about two hours to clear the highway of snow.

Avalanche mitigation has been active in the mountains since last week’s winter storm dumped up to 3 feet of snow in some areas.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center determined that much of the avalanche danger in the high country is moderate to considerable.

Colorado Trail & Skiing Parking Lots Blocked Due To High Volume Of Cars

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – Two parking lots near Loveland Pass were blocked off Sunday morning with snow. The Colorado Department of Transportation says they were forced to place the barriers to stop drivers from parking unsafely on U.S. 6.

(credit: CBS)

“I thought it was nice when they allowed people to go and just do you know park in the right spot,” said one skier from Vail who didn’t want to give his name.

Colorado State Patrol says they saw license plates from Colorado, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, California, Texas, Illinois and Massachusetts at Loveland Pass on Saturday.

Not everyone thinks the closures are warranted.

“I don’t understand the social distancing part where we are far more than six feet away from any person, much more so than when we are walking in Walmart and Home Depot,” the skier said.

(credit: CBS)

Despite Gov. Jared Polis’ stay-at-home order and pleas from local high country government offices for people to stay away, every weekend has seen similar conditions. CBS4 crews spotted license plates from seven different states in one parking lot on Sunday.

Some backcountry users came off the mountain to find their car nearly blocked inside a lot.

About The Colorado Stay-At-Home Order

Colorado’s stay-at-home order amid the coronavirus outbreak went into effect on the morning of March 26 and it is currently set to expire on April 26.

Coloradans are urged to stay in their own community and not travel for recreation or to get outside. Only essential businesses have been given the green light to keep in-person operations going, and those that remain open are required to keep in line with social distancing guidelines.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) – Lakewood Police are reminding drivers still on the roads for essential jobs that speed limits are still enforced, even with fewer drivers on the roads. They tweeted about a stop early Tuesday morning.

The driver who was stopped was going 149 miles per hour in a 65 miles per hour zone along 6th Avenue, near Simms.

Lakewood Police told CBS4 that the stop is a 12-point violation, and the driver in question could have his license suspended if he is convicted.

Teenage Girl Who Got Stuck On A Rock Rescued From Clear Creek

0

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – A teenage girl floating in Clear Creek got carried away — literally — and required rescue Monday afternoon. The girl apparently caught a rock in the middle of the stream and stopped her downstream progress, but could not get herself out of the creek, said Karlyn Tilley, spokesperson for Golden Fire Department.

(credit: CBS)

Rescue teams stopped traffic near the intersection of Highway 6 and Highway 119 to conduct the operation. Copter4 was overhead as an inflatable raft was pushed to her position under a bridge and she was floated downstream where she could walk out on her own. She was reported to be uninjured, but paramedics were waiting on the bridge to evaluate her physical condition anyhow.

(credit: CBS)

Monday’s daytime high temperature the warmest of the year thus far at 85 degrees. That means an increasing rate of snowmelt in the high country that will eventually reach rivers and creeks. The mountain runoff signifies increased recreation opportunities for rafters and tubers.

Rescue teams also know it means more calls for help.

“The water is not even very high right now and it’s still dangerous,” said Tilley. “It can be dangerous at any level.”

(credit: CBS)

The teamwork required to carry out a rescue carries additional risks right now, Tilley added. Team members have to work in close proximity while managing coronavirus exposure to themselves and the people they are rescuing.

“People should not be putting themselves in harm’s way any more than they have to,” Tilley said. “Especially now with everything going on, we advise people to think twice.”

Colorado Cyclist Hit By SUV Over Weekend Doesn’t Understand ‘Hatred For Bikers’

(CBS4) – A cyclist is recovering in the hospital after being struck by an SUV while riding on Highway 6 in Summit County over the weekend. The Colorado State Patrol is looking for the driver who hit Christopher Jacobs and then drove away.

Christopher Jacobs

Christopher Jacobs (credit: CBS)

It happened on Saturday when Jacobs was heading to the top of Loveland Pass and had gotten about halfway up to Arapahoe Basin.

Jacobs said he didn’t hear the driver coming. He doesn’t remember much beyond feeling a lot of pain in his back when he was hit from behind.

“My back felt like it was being crushed. And the next thing I know I was on the ground, curled up in a ball. I was spitting blood,” he said.

The collision knocked Jacobs unconscious. He fractured his spine and tore several ligaments in his ankles.

Jacobs told CBS4 he’s been living in Colorado for about 5 years and doesn’t understand why there “seems to be a hatred for bikers on the road.”

“It seems kind of hard to say that, but it just seems like there is very little patience for drivers and bikes to share the road together,” he said.

The vehicle CSP is looking for was described as being a 2011 to 2015 Ford Explorer. It likely has front end damage, including damage to the right front fender.

Jacobs said he hopes the driver turns himself in.

VIDEO: Woman Catches Wrong Way Driver On 6th Avenue

DENVER (CBS4) – Incredible video shows a driver going the wrong way on 6th Avenue in Denver, and somehow not hitting anyone. Gloria Vigil caught it on video.

“It took me a double take because was I seeing this correctly?” Vigil wondered.

She says other cars avoided the driver, but crashed themselves.

(credit: Gloria Vigil)

“There was on two occasions we saw them run into the car next to them in that lane, then in my rearview I saw dust or smoke from cars wrecking into each other,” she said.

Vigil told CBS4 she was getting on Highway 6 at Lowell Boulevard. Based on her speed, she thinks the driver was going 50 mph.

“He was keeping up with us in the fast lane.”

(credit: Gloria Vigil)

Somehow there were no major crashes. Denver police looked at their logs and said there were only reports of people calling in about a reckless driver on 6th Avenue between Interstate 25 to Sheridan Boulevard.

The calls came in around 2 p.m. Sunday, but no one got a license plate.

“Why didn’t he slow down? Why didn’t he get onto the shoulder wait until there was no traffic and then just turn around at that point?” Vigil asked.

(credit: Gloria Vigil)

It’s unclear what caused the driver to go the wrong way. However, police say, if you happen to accidentally head in the wrong direction, pull over onto the emergency lane, and call the police, don’t try to turn around.

“I can’t imagine … looking down for one second and not realizing there was somebody coming at me,” Vigil said.

If you’re even in the situation where a driver is coming towards you, police say try to steer away and brake safely.

Investigators are still looking into what happened.

‘They Got Lucky’: Two Climbers Injured After Large Rock Dislodged In Clear Creek Canyon

0

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – Two Denver-area women suffered serious injuries Saturday in an area of established climbing routes in Clear Creek Canyon. Authorities closed part of Highway 6 after fire trucks, ambulances, a medical helicopter and rescue personnel responded to the scene and required use of all lanes of traffic.

Emergency crews were notified of the incident at about 10:15 a.m.

According to Capt. Ben Moline of the Golden Fire Department, a man was climbing one of the many routes east of Tunnel 2. He was about 30 feet above one of the women who was on belay, or supporting his ascent with a safety rope. As the man grabbed and pulled his way up, a large “person-sized” rock, as described by witnesses, came loose and fell.

It struck the ground near the woman and shattered. One of the flying pieces struck the woman on the head. She wasn’t wearing a helmet.

Another female climber, standing nearby but not actively climbing, was hit in the foot.

The man was uninjured.

“This was honestly a kind of fluke accident,” Moline told CBS4. “The rock formations just change over time. We’ve had a lot of rain recently, and it was hot today. The rocks expand. We believe that’s what happened today.”

Moline acknowledged the climbers were fortunate the boulder did not directly land on either of the women.

“They got lucky with where the rock fell and how it broke into pieces,” Moline said. But, he added, “The climbers did exactly what they needed to after the accident.”

Moline said the accident occurred just east of Tunnel 2 on rock formations popular with intermediate and advanced rock climbers. He said the area has 15-20 established routes.

The fire department’s ladder truck raised a bucket to meet rescuers and their patients midway up the slope. It’s a maneuver that Moline said they’ve used more than once in this very spot. It is quicker than setting up a rope system and safer, too, Moline stated.

The women, both 37 years old, were taken to St. Anthony’s Medical Center.

The Colorado State Patrol shared video of Flight For Life helicopter lifting off with the woman with the head injury.

Officials with the City of Golden sent out a news release in the afternoon saying that a silver Chevrolet Malibu was spotted by the officer at 4:53 a.m. going down 6th at 90 to 100 mph. The speed limit there is 45 mph.

After the collision, the SUV burst into flames and two of the people who were inside caught fire as well. The officer immediately jumped in to help and used a fire extinguisher to first get the flames off the two people and then pull them from the vehicle and to safety.
